Right now, 100% of our electricity comes from Nanticoke, the largest coal fired plant in North America and the 5th largest toxic air polluter in Canada ...and its right in our backyard.
Power for faith and healing is designed to incorporate education, the environment and communities of different types, into one program that benefits all ...not just individuals. It is a turnkey operation including the initial project assessment, design and engineering, installation, connection to the grid and service.
One of the goals of this program is to get enough community based groups signed up to form a co-op that will increase our purchasing power and drive down the cost of the equipment, which in turn will shorten the payback period and increase the revenue of the participating organization.
By working together participants will be strengthening our community, helping the environment and at the end of the day, making money too'.
If we get 20 groups installed at around 10kw each, we will be responsible for a reduction of 200 tonnes of CO2 per year.
The Purpose
There are 6 main components:
- To educate non-profit groups regarding the generation of electricity through the use of photovoltaic panels, greenhouse gas emissions, and our current electricity source.
- To enlighten each other by sharing our different reasons why we should improve our care for the earth with regard to our religious beliefs through inter-faith cooperation.
- To empower groups within our community by enabling them to take responsibility for their electricity consumption and make sound long term decisions regarding the environment.
- To strengthen communities through mutual involvement in a project that promotes energy conservation in our churches, mosques, synagogues and other places of worship and healing.
- To contribute clean, renewable energy to the electricity grid.
- To promote a green economy by helping create jobs.
The Benefits
The benefits are not exclusive to the groups participating in the project. From the environmental perspective, all will benefit from reduced greenhouse gas emissions. When the initial target of 20 groups participating is reached, a reduction of approximately 200 tonnes of CO2 per year will be generated!
- The community will be strengthened from the interfaith and inter agency cooperation that will be involved in this project and from the educational aspect as well.
- The groups participating will benefit from this project financially with potential income of up to $11,000.00 per year generated by the export of clean electricity to the grid.
Having multiple groups involved means bulk purchasing power and larger discounts passed on to the organizations participating in the project.
By both learning and teaching about creation care and environmental stewardship and by interacting with individuals from other faiths with this regard, people will grow in their understanding of each other, our planet and of themselves.
This program is being developed by Direct Current Renewable Energy Inc., a local small but growing business. There will also be a benefit to this section of our local green economy. System design and engineering, electricians and installers will have increased opportunities for employment.
